Since the Converse company first produced the iconic All-Star basketball shoe in 1917, the world of sport and fashion has had an interesting relationship. Some 90 years later, the All-Star, also commonly known as Chuck Taylor All Star or simply Chucks, are as popular as they’ve ever been. Popular, perhaps, but not exactly functional as a modern shoe for athletes – today’s basketball shoes are technologically leaps ahead of their predecessors.
The popularity of basketball shoes with non-sporting people isn’t surprising – basketball shoes are well made, stylish and each season brings a new crop of unique features and designs. Many legendary professional basketball players have lent their name to basketball shoes since the day of Chuck Taylor.
Michael Jordan is arguably the most famous name attached to basketball shoes. Nike’s Air Jordan basketball shoe was first released in 1985 – since then, each season has seen slight variations, performance enhancing improvements and a wide array of colour schemes adorning this now iconic piece of footwear history. Over twenty years later, the Air Jordan is still one of the most sought-after pieces of footwear on earth.
Though the majority of basketball shoes from leading brands are aimed at men, there are a number of basketball shoes designed specifically with women in mind. Popular women’s basketball shoes include the Women’s Pro Model S by Adidas, Reebok’s Impact DMX and ATR Detonate, the Jordan women’s Retro X.
